Wireless broadband configuration service
With laptops reducing in price, many domestic PC owners are purchasing laptops for flexibility and reduced need for desk space. Along with this trend, domestic broadband adoption has meant that many are also purchasing wireless broadband routers so that they're not tethered to the desk and can roam freely around the house with their laptop.
Growing security threat
Wireless broadband routers include a variety of security features, including access restrictions and encryption, but many new adopters fail to enable these for a variety of reasons including:
- Lack of understanding of the technology
- Failure to configure the settings properly
- Don't perceive of a threat
Unfortunately, the threat is very real and it's only a matter of time before WiFi hacking becomes commonplace and reaches the spotlight of the media.
More recent wireless broadband routers have excellent range. This is great if you want to use your laptop down the end of the garden, but not so great if you live in a flat and want to protect your data and your investment in bandwidth.
How you're at risk
Laptop users, or for that matter, PDA users, can connect to an unsecured WiFi network with a single click. Most will simply be wanting to use your bandwidth to check their email or download some files without paying for the access themselves. If you have a capped usage allowance on your contract, this could be costing you money at best. At worst, a hacker can scan your internet usage with simple software to obtain your email username and password, scan your email, track your web usage or even download files from your hard drive.
What can you do?
Well, you need to enable the basic security settings on your WiFi router. This is something that you could do yourself, but in our experience, many users find these settings complex and, well, too techie. That's why we're offering our services in basic security configuration. In around an hour, we can configure the settings on your router and set up one PC or Mac to connect. That's one hour's work, so it doesn't cost a fortune. What's more, we're able to visit your home at evenings and weekends to fit in around your schedule.
We can also advise you on best practice regarding antivirus and firewalling to protect your PC further, as well as email configuration, backups and more.
